Some favorite things

December 8, 2017

linen, silk, wool ...

A relatively new linen jacket from Eileen Fisher, a treat to myself as I readied for treatment; a silk blouse, also from Eileen Fisher, purchased more than twenty years ago and still serving me well; and a drop dead gorgeous wool & silk scarf, hand woven by Marjorie Meyers Haber of mmhandwovens on Etsy, a recent Christmas gift from my daughter, Adeline.

and messiness ...

Crop of The Artist at Work

My studio is still terribly messy and therefore unusable, so the dining room sometimes does double duty. I had to clean up for Thanksgiving so now I am loath to get it all cluttered again. I prefer to sit at the table with a cup of tea and enjoy the view.

Maybe I could learn to create things without making a mess ... as did Mary Ellen Best, if we believe her self-portrait, at right, is an accurate representation.

Or I could take comfort in the words of Dasha Zhukova (Russian art collector and founder of the Garage Museum of Contemporary Art and Garage Magazine) who famously said "I like messy. What fun is tidy?"

I think I like messy, too, even though it can get out of hand. I like it the way I like insomnia. The hours between midnight and 4 AM are my favorites, even though it may be better for my health to be asleep during that time.

And, anyway, messiness goes hand-in-hand with genius.

* * * I'm a genius! * * *

Jean-Michel Basquiat, one of the most genius artists ever, shared this memory: "I was a really lousy artist as a kid. Too abstract expressionist; or I'd draw a big ram's head, really messy. I'd never win painting contests. I remember losing to a guy who did a perfect Spiderman."

If you want to know about Basquiat, then this is the movie to watch:

Sewist’s soul food

August 19, 2017

Gobs of embroidery floss purchased at an online auction ... and I got a great price!

Finally finishing this little taupe nine-patch. I thought I might make it a sewing roll-up, or even a book of some sort, but no - I just want it to be a nine-patch with no particular purpose but to please the eye.

"There’s a loaf of moldy bread on the kitchen counter - please don’t throw it away. I want to see if I can get some prints from it." Yes, that is a typical sentence at our house.

Bill and Adeline ... two of my favorite people.

Vintage glass floats (most of which were gifts) in an awesome vase (which was a gift).

Studio clean-up progress

August 3, 2017

  I still have a long way to go, but I do believe progress is becoming evident. I can see the floor!

  I am shocked by how slowly this challenge progresses. I first wrote about it HERE.

The Studio Truth

October 28, 2016

Can you stand it? Can I? When I say my studio has become a big mess and I can’t even walk through it without fearing I’ll trip and fall ... well, here’s the proof. It’s really bothering me so much, that I have no space in here to actually work. And now, more than ever, I’d really love to be at peace in here, making things. But now, more than ever, I am hideously tired much of the time, so that big clean-up won’t be happening.

I’m going to challenge myself to baby steps. Try to do a bit of clean-up every day. Maybe just a half an hour each day. And I’ll post my progress here, at my blog, under the heading "studio clean-up" in the right column. Wish me luck!

I am, by the way, quite bald now. I don’t have a photo yet ... it’s not exactly my favorite look! But I do have a wig! I am keeping with my tradition of taking my fuck cancer selfies in public rest rooms - don’t ask me why, because I do not know. Maybe because, oddly enough, the lighting can be flattering! So, here is me in my wig, in the bathroom at Washington Prime in Georgetown, CT - the lighting is an awesome warm color and makes me look rosy rather than pallid. LOL.

IT NEEDS A TRIM, BUT I LIKE IT WELL ENOUGH.

What brings me joy - My daughter, her husband, and, OMG, my granddaughter - and they live a mere twelve minute drive away. I’m lucky. And thankful.

* It’s a Flag! By Doug! *

We both like making flags, each in our own way. I’m loving this latest one from Doug. It’s an awesome little flag - only 10" wide x 5.5" high, made of tiny pieces of card stock which Doug coats
